At the academic conference “Ascent and Descent. Renaissance Staircases in Europe”, experts will guide you, step by prestigious step, through history. STAIRCASES AS SHOWPIECES

Staircases not only connect different levels. They are often prestigious showpieces, impressing with their subtleties and elegance. A prime example of this is the Berwart spiral staircase at the Mergentheim Residential Palace which, in 2024, will celebrate 450 years since its completion. The academic conference, hosted by the State Palaces and Gardens (Staatliche Schlösser und Gärten Baden-Württemberg) and by the Rudolstadt Working Group for Residence Culture (Rudolstädter Arbeitskreis für Residenzkultur), will focus on the functions, structural aspects, intentions and range of forms of European staircases of the Renaissance. The conference language is German.

HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT STAIRCASES

The conference involves leading academics and has been divided into four sections. On Friday, October 11, following an overview of the research, the Renaissance staircases of the Mergentheim Residence will be the focus. Using selected examples from Avignon, Paris, Würzburg and other locations, staircases will then be presented as places used for representational purposes. An evening lecture and reception at the Bad Mergentheim new town hall complete the first day.

FUNCTIONAL AND FASCINATING

The function of the staircase in the residence will be examined on the morning of Saturday, October 12. Among other things, this will also consider the Little Ice Age and its effects. Attention will then turn to staircases as showpieces of construction. This section is focused on early spiral staircases, it also outlines the stages of development of open newel staircases and highlights fascinating examples in Vienna, the Vatican, France and Portugal – the range offers a good basis for comparison.
